The entire county is experiencing rapid growth with Freeport at the heart of it all. Walton County Chamber of Commerce Destin Log , October 01, 2004 Freeport is a small city with a big future on the horizon.That’s according to Mayor Mickey Marse, who says rapid growth from South Walton is making its way north — and Freeport is ready and waiting. Property values, he said, are on their way up in and around the city. “Speculation on it (land) has gone through the roof,” he said. Only a 15-minute drive north of the beaches, Freeport is fertile ground for developers, Freeport real estate broker Lee Perry said. “The land on the south side of the bay is gone,” he said. “This is basically our last frontier.” Home prices in and around Freeport typically range from $175,000 and up for single family homes, Perry said. “The values have doubled in just the last six to eight months,” he said. The growth is so tremendous that Freeport’s population could exceed 8,000 in the next 10 years, according to a recent estimate by the Walton County Economic Development Council.
